V. Shantaram’s ‘Pinjara’: “Trapped into a self-made Cage”

The 1972 Marathi classic ‘Pinjara’ which starred Shreeram Lagoo and Sandhya, the film portrays the story of a righteous and intellectual school teacher who is respected all over the village but eventually he falls in love with a Tamasha performer which gets him trapped in his self made cage.

This V. Shantaram classic remains to be one of the finest Indian films of all time.
What is morality?’ The film seems to ask. Is morality just a lack of opportunity? Can you remain honourable in a profession, which lacks ethics? The protagonist is hounded by his immoral behaviour purely because of his belief in morality, and the obvious answer to save himself is the one that will destroy him forever.

It has almost been 50 years since this film was released and yet it has a power to attract audience even today if it’s released in theatres again.
