Yeh Dooriyan: A Swoonworthy Tale That Reinvents Long-Lost Romance Tropes

Please note: This is a PR piece.

It’s absurd-yet-intriguing! Despite experiencing the highs and lows of pandemic, lockdown, and an array of problems that came along with it, the mankind has managed to overcome the hardships and rise upwards and onwards. Albeit with a dash of entertainment!

And now that the Covid-induced lockdowns have eased, we are already preoccupied with our work life. Well, don’t worry, we just have the right form of entertainment to wash away our workday blues, precisely everyday blues. Quite similarly, let me introduce you all to my new find over internet- The swoonworthy Indian miniseries ‘Yeh Dooriyan’ which reinvents essential tropes from the romance genre. So, let’s dive more into it!

To give you a gist, let me take you through the synopsis:

Vikram & Aisha have been in a relationship for ten years and married for the last two, but they have never had a naughty date over the internet. However, with no way to meet in person, there’s no other recourse either. Nevertheless, when the world remains shut for almost three more weeks, well past their marriage anniversary, will the romance give way to anguish?

Review & Analysis:

Yeh Dooryian is a long-distance romance in modern times based on the backdrop of Covid led lockdown. Director, Souvik Gupta spins an honest depiction of ‘Love in the times of Covid’ and the challenges of a long-distance relationship where a couple is dependent on their devices to keep their relationship alive.

Manjari Fadnnis plays the role of Dori who is a corporate fast climber in Delhi while Nemo played by Paresh Pahuja, her boyfriend of 8 years who she is now married to is struggling with finances. Nemo tries to keep multiple writing jobs as he is striving to find a foothold in the film industry in Mumbai. Their professions keep them in different cities, they have very different personalities and yet there is a deep connection between them, mutual admiration, love and respect. In comes Covid and they are confined to their respective cities, challenging to meet up for their anniversary which is around the corner.

The confinement opens up the pandora’s box of issues of long distance, life goals and brings the couple to the brink of existential crises where they are compelled to review their choices. Gupta’s realistic portrayal of characters, circumstances and the final resolution of plot complexities are nuanced yet very lucid. Music has always been a cornerstone in love stories, in this case Gupta’s brilliant taste in music steers the plot forward or helps in building the characters through conversations. From Bach, Beethoven to Bappi, clever usage of a playback number and an apt rendition of Ray’s ‘Chini Go Chini’ on the piano makes Yeh Dooriyan an interesting watch.
